Assisted living communities offer residential communities and aid to seniors who may need help with everyday activities such as mobility or cooking meals. The services offered often involve help with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under monitoring and assessment. In select instances, communities may offer respite, dementia care, or continuing care. The monthly median cost for a private room is around $7,194 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $6,844 . South Dakota has specific standards related to this type of community. The South Dakota Department of Health, Office of Health Care communities Licensure and Certification regulates this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include coordinate resident access to a physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner at least annually, skilled care must be delivered by community staff or a Medicare-certified home health agency for a limited time with a planned end date, and supportive services for activities and spiritual needs individualized to each resident. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as physical examination, assess each resident€™Ã‚¢Ã…¡s cognitive status upon admission, and social accommodations. Staff must receive education in a variety of areas. These areas include mandatory reporting policies, proper use restraints, resident rights, and fire prevention. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include evaluated by pharmacist and licensed nurse , Residents may self-administer drugs, and medication administration . This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals must be served daily, ensure that meals and snacks are nutritionally adequate in accordance with the Recommended Dietary Allowances, and If residents require special diets, a dietician must be employed or consulted to approve special diet needs and written menus, plan individual diets, and provide guidance to dietary staff.
