Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide regular social interaction and apartment style housing as well as individual assistance. Assisted living communities often offer chances for leisurely activity, aid with daily activities, and aid with appointments and transit. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide dementia care, “aging in place”, or hospice. The state of South Carolina maintains specific standards associated with this kind of community. The Board of Health and Environmental Control, Division of Health Licensing certifies this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include transportation, at least one structured recreation activity each day, assistance with ADLs, and medication assistance. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as dietary needs, recreational and social activities that are suitable, desirable, and important to the resident s well-being, assistance with ADLs for the resident, and assessing the extent of residents problems and needs. The maximum occupancy is 3 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include special menus are provided for those with special dietary needs and three meals and snacks that meet dietary needs. Staff members obtain education in a variety of fields. These areas include occupational safety and health administration standards regarding blood-borne pathogens, Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for designated staff members/volunteers to ensure that there is a certified staff member/volunteer present whenever residents are in the community, Basic first-aid, and emergency procedures. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include monitor blood sugar levels, staff may self administer medications under licensed staff supervision, and administer routine medications.
