Assisted living communities offer coordinated social interaction and apartment style housing as well as individual assistance. Services provided often include assistance with ADLs. Residents may be kept under monitoring and assessment. In certain cases, communities may provide hospice, nursing, or respite. South Carolina maintains specific regulations related to this type of community. The Board of Health and Environmental Control, Division of Health Licensing regulates this type of community. There is a maximum occupancy of 3 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include monitor blood sugar levels, staff may self administer medications under licensed staff supervision, and administer routine medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three meals and snacks that meet dietary needs and special menus are provided for those with special dietary needs . This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include transportation, at least one structured recreation activity each day, assistance with ADLs, and medication assistance. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as dietary needs, assessing the extent of residents problems and needs, recreational and social activities that are suitable, desirable, and important to the resident s well-being, and requirements and arrangements for visits by or to physicians or other authorized health providers. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan.. Staff members obtain education in a variety of fields. These include: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for designated staff members/volunteers to ensure that there is a certified staff member/volunteer present whenever residents are in the community, use of restraints , Basic first-aid, and management/care of persons with contagious and/or communicable disease.
