Assisted Living

An assisted living community is an organized living community which administers assistance, support, and care to self-sufficient seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities often provide chances for organized activity, assistance with transit and appointments, and care supervision. In select cases, communities may provide hospice, respite, or nursing care. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri maintains a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation regulates this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three daily meals, modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, and modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with storage of medications, protective oversight, nursing services, and assistance with instrumental activities of daily living. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of fields. These include: 24 hours of additional training on interview skills, behavior management, instruction regarding person-centered care and the social model of care, and 24 hours of additional training consisting of definition and assessment of activities of daily living. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, and self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, and assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually.
