Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which provides supervision, support, and care to healthy persons who are not in need of skilled nursing services. The types of service provided often involve aid with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, hospice, or Alzheimer’s care. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri has a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation supervises this type of community. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, and authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, communities must provide at least three daily meals, and modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided. Staff are required to receive training in a number of subjects. These include: working with residents with mental illness, instruction regarding person-centered care and the social model of care, promoting independence in activities of daily living, and fire safety. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include 24-hour care, assistance with recreational activities, assistance with activities of daily living , and assistance with administration of medications. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves, a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, and insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration.
