Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer personal care, oversight, and social opportunities to persons who are about 65 years of age or older. Services offered often include help with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under observation and evaluation. In certain instances, communities may provide nursing care, hospice, or respite. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri maintains a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation supervises this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with recreational activities, nursing services, assistance with administration of medications, and assistance with distribution. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, and an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, and communities must provide at least three daily meals. Staff must obtain training in a number of areas. These include: working with residents with mental illness, communicating with persons with dementia, orientation appropriate to job function and responsibilities, and abuse/neglect. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, and self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves.
