Assisted Living

An assisted living community is an organized living community which administers support, supervision, and care to healthy seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities often offer supervision of care, aid with transit and appointments, and chances for organized activity. In select cases, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, nursing, or continuing care. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri has a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation licenses this type of community. Staff must receive training in a number of areas. These areas include instruction regarding person-centered care and the social model of care, preservation of resident dignity, mentally confused residents, and working with residents with mental illness. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include protective oversight, assistance with recreational activities, assistance with distribution, and nursing services. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, and complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, and self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three daily meals, modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, and modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority.
