Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide residential communities and aid for persons who might require support with things such as mobility or preparing meals. The services provided often involve help with ADLs. Residents may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, respite, or skilled nursing. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri maintains a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation licenses this community type. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, and complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with distribution, assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, 24-hour care, and nursing services. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three daily meals, modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, and modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves, Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, and a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month. Staff members obtain training in a number of subjects. These include: fire safety, (2 hours) of initial training on transfer assistance, working with residents with mental illness, and 24 hours of additional training consisting of definition and assessment of activities of daily living. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority.
