Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide social interaction, healthcare, and supervision to people who are on average 65 years of age or older. The types of service provided often include assistance with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, Alzheimer’s care, or “aging in place”. The annual median cost for a private room is around $111,508 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $100,481 . The state of Michigan maintains specific standards related to this kind of community. The Department of Human Services licenses regulates this community type. Staff must receive education in a number of areas. These areas include safety and fire prevention, administration of medication, staff training program based on the residents’ service plans, and standard precautions. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication management, assisting a resident to keep appointments, supervised personal care, and being aware of a resident’s general whereabouts. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, three daily meals and snacks must be provided, and Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as service plan identifies the individual’s need for services, The service plan must be updated annually and following a significant change in health status, service plan identifies the individual’s need for activities, and The home must complete a service plan in cooperation with each resident and/or their representative. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, medication supervision and administration, and proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications.
