An assisted living community is a residential community which administers support, supervision, and assistance to healthy persons who are not in need of skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities frequently offer aid with appointments and transportation, care supervision, and outings for leisurely activity. In select instances, communities may provide respite, skilled nursing care, or hospice. The annual median cost for a private room is around $111,508 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $100,481 . The state of Michigan maintains a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Department of Human Services licenses supervises this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, three daily meals and snacks must be provided, and Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council. Staff are required to obtain training in a variety of fields. These areas include residents rights and responsibilities, supervision, reporting requirements and documentation, and first-aid. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as service plan takes into account the preferences and competency of the resident, service plan identifies the individual’s need for services, The service plan must be updated annually and following a significant change in health status, and A comprehensive written assessment that that describes prescribed treatments and medications that must be provided to the community prior to admission. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, medication supervision and administration, and proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include guidance, being aware of a resident’s general whereabouts, reminding resident of important activities to be carried out, and assisting a resident to keep appointments.
