Assisted living communities offer recreational activities, care, and supervision to individuals who are on average 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities usually offer supervision of care, help with the activities of daily life, and chances for social activity. In some situations, communities may provide dementia care, nursing care, or “aging in place”. The annual median cost for a private room is around $111,508 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $100,481 . Michigan has a number of provisions related to this kind of community. The Department of Human Services licenses certifies this community type. Staff are required to receive training in a variety of fields. These areas include reporting requirements and documentation, staff training program based on the home’s program statement, residents rights and responsibilities, and standard precautions. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council, three daily meals and snacks must be provided, and communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications, reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, and medication supervision and administration. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as service plan identifies the individual’s specific needs for care, service plan identifies the individual’s need for services, service plan takes into account the preferences and competency of the resident, and A comprehensive written assessment that that describes prescribed treatments and medications that must be provided to the community prior to admission. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assisting a resident to keep appointments, guidance, reminding resident of important activities to be carried out, and being aware of a resident’s general whereabouts. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21.
