Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide residential living communities and aid to your loved one who need a helping hand with things such as dressing or bathing. The types of service provided often involve help with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under observation and assessment. In some situations, communities may provide hospice, dementia care, or “aging in place”. In Indiana, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 49,200. The state of Indiana has specific statutes related to this type of community. Indiana State Department of Health supervises this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as community will identify scope of care based on evaluation, a negotiated risk plan will be established, evaluation must be updated at least semi-annually or when a significant change in condition occurs, and A comprehensive assessment. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must consider residents’ reasonable religious preferences, communities must consider residents’ ethnic preferences, communities must consider residents’ food allergies, and communities must meet daily dietary requirements and requests. Staff are required to obtain training in a variety of areas. These include: procedures required, including evacuation procedures, resident care, and records. communities must consider residents’ personal preference meals may temporarily be delivered to the resident’s room Public assistance is available through Medicaid A&D and TBI 1915(c) Waiver program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include scheduled transportation for community-based activities, comprehensive nursing care, identifying responses to actual or potential health conditions, and a nursing diagnosis. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include resident must be observed for effects of medications and undesirable effects must be documented and the resident’s physician notified, distribution of prescribed medications, and preparation of prescribed medications.
