Assisted living facilities have the luxury of organized social interaction and apartment style housing as well as personalized care. Services provided often involve aid with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, facilities may offer skilled nursing, "aging in place", or dementia care. In Hawaii, the annual median cost for an assisted living facility is around $52,500 . The state of Hawaii maintains a number of stipulations associated with this type of facility. The Department of Health, Office of Health Care Assurance licenses this type of facility. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as plan must address residents' needs, decisions, or preferences, plan and implement responsive services, the service plan should be developed with the resident's involvement, and omprehensive assessment of each resident's needs. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration waiver program-QUEST Expanded Access.This type of facility is required to offer a number of services. These include transportation, services for residents with behavior problems, opportunities for individual and group socialization, and routine nursing tasks. This facility has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals are appropriate to the residents' needs and choices, meals are evaluated and approved by a dietitian on a semi-annual basis, and a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals. This type of facility is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This facility type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include An RN or physician must review all residents' medications at least every 90 days, medications in units shared by two residents must be kept in a locked container in the unit, and assistance with self-administration of medications. Staff are required to obtain training in a variety of areas. These areas include organization, goals of assisted living, philosophy, and minimum of 6 hours annually.
