Assisted living facilities provide social interaction, oversight, and personal care to individuals around 65 years old. The services offered often involve assistance with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under observation and evaluation. In select instances, facilities may offer "aging in place", nursing care, or hospice. In Hawaii, the annual median cost for an assisted living facility is around $52,500 . The state of Hawaii has a number of provisions associated with this kind of facility. The Department of Health, Office of Health Care Assurance licenses this type of facility. This type of facility is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This facility has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals are evaluated and approved by a dietitian on a semi-annual basis, meals are appropriate to the residents' needs and choices, and a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals. This type of facility is required to offer a number of services. These include transportation, medication administration, health monitoring, and recreational and social activities. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration waiver program-QUEST Expanded Access.This facility type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Residents who self-administer may keep medications in their unit, unlicensed assistive personnel may provide this assistance, and An RN or physician must review all residents' medications at least every 90 days. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as plan must address residents' needs, decisions, or preferences, the service plan should be developed with the resident's involvement, omprehensive assessment of each resident's needs, and plan and implement responsive services. Staff must obtain education in a variety of subjects. These areas include organization, philosophy, minimum of 6 hours annually, and regularly scheduled in-service training.
