Assisted living communities offer a sense of community as well as individual care. Services provided often involve support with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In select cases, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, skilled nursing, or “aging in place”. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . Georgia has a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes regulates this type of community. Staff members receive education in a number of areas. These areas include attendance policies, exploitation of a resident, training necessary to carry out assigned job duties, and assisting residents in transferring and ambulation. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assisted living care, administration of medications by a certified medication aide, the provision of assisted self-preservation, and described as personal services. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting residents with storage of medications, communities must assist residents with self-administration if requested, and assisting residents with self-administration. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, whether family supports are available, personal preferences relative to care needs, and assessment to determine the residents cognitive and behavioral impairments.
