Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which provides care, supervision, and support to independent individuals who do not need skilled nursing care. The services provided often involve aid with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide nursing, respite, or “aging in place”. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . The state of Georgia has specific regulations associated with this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes supervises this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include the provision of assisted self-preservation, administration of medications by a certified medication aide, described as personal services, and assisted living care. Staff are required to obtain training in a variety of areas. These include: general infection control principles, hand hygiene, emergency preparedness, and Medical and social needs and characteristics of the resident population. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting with an Epi pen, communities must assist residents with self-administration if requested, and cognitive and functionally able residents may self-administer medications . The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the residents cognitive and behavioral impairments, A written care plan must document the assessment findings, assessment to determine the resident’s functional capacity with regard to ADLs, and assessment to determine the resident’s physical care needs. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program.
