Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide coordinated social events and apartment style housing as well as individual assistance. Services provided often involve help with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In select situations, communities may provide dementia care, respite, or continuing care. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . Georgia has a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes licenses this type of community. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include administration of medications by a certified medication aide, described as personal services, assisted living care, and the provision of assisted self-preservation. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as whether family supports are available, personal preferences relative to care needs, assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, and assessment to determine the resident’s functional capacity with regard to ADLs. Staff must obtain training in a number of fields. These areas include including the special needs of residents with dementia, general infection control principles, emergency preparedness, and assistance with medications. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand, assisting residents with self-administration, and applying topical medications.
