Arts, Culture, Entertainment, and Recreation

The Miami area is a vibrant cultural center with no shortage of options for things to do. The excellent weather permits year-round outdoor activities and the region is known for several world-famous festivals. The “Little Havana” neighborhood hosts the yearly Calle Ocho festival, originally focusing on the contributions and history of Cuban Americans, but recently expanding to include participation of those from other Latin American countries as well. Calle Ocho is primarily known as a music festival, focusing on Latin American and Caribbean genres. The festival takes place across 28 blocks and features 30 stages of entertainment as well as food and other festivities. Miami is also known for its arts community, hosting the yearly Art Basel festival, which showcases the works of emerging contemporary artists from around the world. Art Basel lasts for several days and draws a worldwide crowd of famous artists, celebrities, and others to observe works in all types of media.

No discussion about living in Miami would be complete without mention of its celebrated beaches, and there are certainly plenty to choose from. Known for its white-sand beaches, pristine waters, and art deco hotels, South Beach is perhaps the most well-known of them all. Such notoriety can often mean large crowds, but it’s worth a visit. For a quieter and more historic getaway, stop by Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park Beach. A charmingly rustic affair, this park features nature trails as well as a historic lighthouse built in the 1820s. For nearby dining options, check out Boater’s Grill — a waterfront restaurant specializing in seafood and authentic Cuban cuisine.

Miami is also celebrated as a sports city, with good reason. The city itself is home to approximately 14 golf courses, including multiple public options, but the surrounding area has plenty more. The state of Florida as a whole boasts over a thousand golf courses, both public and private, with a great number in the southern portion of the state. Miami has plenty to offer in the way of professional sports as well, no matter your interests. The professional teams that call Miami home include the Miami Dolphins (football), Miami Heat (basketball), Miami Marlins (baseball), Florida Panthers (hockey), and the Inter Miami CF (soccer).
