Assisted living is great, memory care is for more advanced residents

We had originally moved my mother in law up from another location in Virginia so she could be closer to us, originally it was in the assisted living section but then certain things happened that we were required to move her into the secured unit at Tall Oaks fairly quickly and because of that we moved her. I think the assisted lviing section was very good and the memory care section, the secured floor, for someone who is much more advanced in their dementia, I think was very good, but their program was geared towards helping and maintaining their level of dementia but we felt she didn't fit in. They did not have a wander guard system in their assisted living and she wasn't advanced enough to be in their secured floor so we moved her.

No Metro Access was a dealbreaker

This one's really nice, it's set up very similar to Tall Oaks. The food is actually really good, they had a little bit of both cafeteria style and if they had a special they might do it to order and they had a salad bar people really seemed to like. Where you went to eat was a big sun room was there was a lot of light and it felt really open. Metro Access doesn't go to Woodbridge and that was the dealbreaker because we couldn't get her to her docotos appointment without it, it would have been a full time job.

Wonderful activities, quality of care dropped

Things started off really well, my mom has a lot of medical issues and they were starting to drop the ball in that department. She has diabetes and there's a lot of things they need to do to manage that. They don't have an actual RN on duty all the time and the ones that are technically on duty, half the time aren't even there because they're off doing assessments so you have a lot of people who aren't really nurses and on top of that, instead of managing the residents, they would manage to their schedule. It was getting realyl frustrating, they weren't taking her blood when they were supposed to and if she needed to take meds before meals, they would make her come to them, it was getting real cumbersome. They were really good with events, they were taking them to shows, they went out shopping 2 times a week, the grocery store and then some sort of big box like Target and they always had people coming to the facility, all kinds of things to make them feel like they were getting attention from the outside.

Would like for them to do more problem solving

It's very clean, they're very friendly, I think the care is good, she's only been there for a couple of weeks so well see, but they do have activities; she is able to particiapte, willing to, no. The only problem I have is that she did go outside one day, she was confused and thought she had a car and was looking for it but their solution was for me to hire another outside firm to come in and be a companion for her. That's extremely expensive and I already felt I was paying them a lot so they could be willing to do a bit more or come up with some alternate solutions, but they just jumped right into "you need to hire a companion." I was able to do that within a 24 hour time period, they gave me a list of 4 companies and I was able to find one immediately. I was bothered with that being their first solution without looking into other options though. The one time that she was very upset they called my right away, they have registered nurses who are certified by the state and I liked that, it was also originally intended as a senior living place so the apartments are much larger.

Provided with new application and price listing. Saw one bedroom apts, as no 2 bedrooms available or expected to be available any time soon. Laundry is not done here, though there is a pay laundromat on each floor. Mom has a friend from church here, and we were able to eat dinner with her tonight. Very nice and good service. One resident at dinner had difficulty, and staff helped her quickly. Staff and residents seemed were pleasant and happy. When talking about places, Mom seems to say that she would rather be here than any of the others.

I did really like Tall Oaks, but I did not like that you had to use the elevators to get to the rooms, activities and dining were on the first floor.

Nice community

This is a very nice community and the staff did a really great job on our tour here, they took their time showing us around and they answered all our questions. I just did not feel that this was going to be a good fit for my father and that there would not be enough going on to keep him busy.

The community areas and dining rooms were lovely, but the apartments weren't as nice as the rest of the place.

I loved the menu, and the size of the community. It was more expensive than some of the other options I was considering. They were a little more pushy, calling quite often and following up. They were very nice and very beautiful, but a little further away for us. They don't have independent living, everything is some level of assisted. I didn't like the layout of the rooms either, some of the bathrooms were off of the living room instead of the bedroom, and the rooms were small. The carpeting wasn't that nice either, not very plush. The community areas and dining rooms were lovely, but the apartments weren't as nice as the rest of the place.

I enjoyed my visit to Potomac Place. I am not considering it for my mother as the units have equipped kitchenettes, including electric stoves. As my mother ages, she has become more forgetful and sometimes leaves a pot of the stove and doesn't remember it until she smells it burning up. I don't want mother to have access to a stove.

While the building is dated and needs an overhaul, as do the rooms, it was a very busy, active place. Lots of activities for the residents who seemed pleasant and friendly. The prices are decent for the Northern Virginia area, but close to places with nicer, more updated facilities. The dining room was a bit of a walk from the elevator. Nice solarium and side rooms. Staff was very friendly.
