Define the difference between memory care and physical need. Look at the size of the facility look at turnover and staff look at price. Look at staff/patient ratio look at location.

Things I wasn't happy with; 1. Had to buzz in front door, but no one was ever at front desk to let you in our out. 2. My moms room always smelled of urine, they left her sheets or clothes in the shower, would only launder 1x week. 3. Turnover in the caregivers was constant. No one working there seemed happy.

Staff was condescending to family during meetings. Although we were incredibly candid about my mom's needs, and they repeatedly promised they could meet her needs, they asked her to find alternative placement after less than two months. This was so much more traumatizing than it would have been for them to never admit her in the first place. Billing people were rude and threatening towards a [age removed] year old husband who was paying the bills. It took almost 2 months to get billing corrected after she was asked to leave mid month. Residents would have bowel movements in the hall that wouldn't be cleaned up for over an hour.

My mom had no issues with the staff personally, who were always pleasant and friendly, but there was always the sense that they were severely understaffed and disorganized. Often inattentive or very slow to respond to maintenance needs. Food often barely edible. Activities almost nonexistent but mostly due to lack of participation as most of the residents were very limited mentally and physically. Most of the conversations with other residents revolved around complaints. One big learning experience is that we should not have put her in a facility that also housed memory care patients.

They do not have enough staff for safety. My aunt fell out of her wheelchair 6 to 8 times in one month with no one around to know how long she laid on the floor out in the hallway. The staff told me to complain because they are short-staffed. Women in administration are nice until they get caught and then they started lying about what was happening. Not impressed with management at all. Very expensive for what was not provided. Memory care on 3rd floor I would not recommend to anyone. If you would like to call me about this you can try afternoons about this time.

When my wife became unable to feed herself they started charging $[removed] a day to do so(corporate policy) and no alternative-no credit for when I fed her. The activities director was very good. The staff generally seemed determined to do what they wanted to do when they felt like doing it. The fee structure was opaque and upgraded based on ?.

They can improve by allowing assisted living and independent living residents to eat in either dining room. I would not recommend. The sales staff was not accommodating to my mother when it was determined that my father was not going to be allowed to go to their facility because of a wound issue. They refused to issue her a refund and we had a lawyer get involved to settle the situation with their corporate offices.

Areas that need improvement: attentiveness to needs of resident. I visited and found my husband locked in his room which is a huge violation. He was malnourished. In fact, he had lost 10 lbs. while in their care. Regarding cleanliness, the facility overall was pretty clean. However, I visited and discovered that my husband's soiled clothing were piled in a corner and had not been washed from the time I dropped him off. In addition, the facility misplaced 3 of his personal items. After a few days the items were returned, one of which was not the correct one.

My friend hated it so much that he gave them his 30 day notice after a short time of being there. Other people living there were equally displeased . I couldn’t believe the amount of money he was paying! I haven’t been involved since Christmas, so, I’m not sure if he has left.

Lights too bright even in our unit. We were told our unit could be adjusted, but then no. Many staff yell most of the time, even to each other. Worst staff set the tone for almost all the rest. A few were very good. Good food but very poor service almost all the time….creates tension 3 x a day. Much more expensive than many alternatives.

Overall experience -There were some members of nursing staff that were rude. I believe her first name was [name removed]. While the director said they would staff up for mom's care, she was often left unattended to on the weekends. They did not have the staff to care for her needs and we removed her in spring of 2023. The facility was clean. Some staff were very nice. Others not at all. And several of the aides did not speak English so difficult to communicate. The dining staff was good. Some of the aides were very nice, but this facility simply wasn't staffed for the level of care my mother required. Again, the level of care we needed was not appropriate to the facility. I don't know why they ever agreed to take her. Additionally, whenever I requested a meeting with the nursing staff, my messages went unanswered. We have since moved mom home with private caregivers and are spending 1/10 the cost. And she has no bedsores because we are changing her regularly.

Well as far as 7 The value of cost it all depends I feel on the care that the person needs. In my situation my mom had the onset of dementia. She was at the point where she could still bath brush her teeth, eat pick out her clothes the help that she needed was to be reminded to do these tasks. She was in the part of the facility where she could not escape because she liked to wander. And I'm sure the other guests that resided there if they needed more taken care of the cost was even higher, but that's my opinion. My mom didn't have an overabundance of money so we had to be very careful on where to put her in the first place we did choose was not a good one was more like a mental hospital and it was about $4000 cheaper she didn't even stay one full night when she woke up there was a naked person in her bed with her so she was kind of happy to be in Mount Vernon rather then in Somers. Now I have one other major complaint that I feel should be addressed for future residents and maybe most of those other residents don't leave. And probably my fault also for not doing research. I mean this was my first rodeo. She was given a doctor at the facility and once she entered there her primary doctor on the outside no longer wanted anything to do with her. Even the doctor in the facility couldn't get any answers from this outside provider, which I think really sucks but the most annoying thing was when my mom was ready to leave they were supposed to give me the rest of her medication and there was medication missing a shortness of pills not enough to carry her through a month and when I called them, they said they would look into it. Then when the following month came, she had no pills. This woman was on. I'm gonna say nine maybe more maybe a little less and for her to not take them and go through withdrawals on some of them was not a good thing they told me to contact my doctor, she didn't have a doctor down there in South Carolina. It takes six months of residency to even to have a primary care doctor. so I did call Mount Vernon and I begged for them to give me pills. They told me they could help me out for maybe three months but that would be it. I finally had to go to a family member who is a physician give him the scripts and he filled the medication for me. And the last thing is when you leave and I did need help like I said with the meds. They will just ignore your calls. I guess hoping you will give up. Research. it's very hard to say because you feel that where you are placing that person the people in charge are so kind and you feel good that you're doing the right thing. They make you feel comfortable that she's accepted and the paperwork is phenomenal. The other thing is that my mom was aware of her surroundings at that point and she was adamant. I am not staying here, so she really didn't participate in a lot of things, but she did after a while attach herself to one woman that was there and the staff let her be so she was quite comfortable and she was happy. Number one is when you take your tour really look at every nook and cranny things could be staged. It could be a better part of the day when there is not so much screaming and yelling and fighting between the residents , which might make you say no I don't think I want that for my person.. What are you doing? #2 that there would be no problem with you taking that person in and out of the facility whenever you feel you want to bring them home. It could be for a holiday or special event. I took my mom home like every other weekend and she stayed here with me for three or four days and I took her back. But then again it all depends on the situation for that person either going in and never coming out or they need some care that we can't do because we are working people. . Do your research take a tour say thank you you'll think about and I know after you say that they're gonna say well space is limited. You have to think about it really quick because we might have somebody on the waiting list it. Give it a couple days. Go back for another tour. Unexpected if you can.

Most of the staff and faculty really care about the residents and are friendly and do great work with them. The activity director is wonderful and the things she does with the residents are really like therapy in that she gets them moving, speaking, thinking, and interacting. There are plenty of things to do for social interaction. The wellness nurse and the medication aids are great. We have had problems with laundry _both getting it done and having things go missing. We've had problems with the care aids not answering call buttons- once mom was having an allergic reaction and no one came to help. My dad called me. We were 7 minutes away and drove over to the home, found a nurse and she got help. The food is a big disappointment and though the cook is nice and cooks tasty meals- when it takes so long to get served, it tends to get cold and tough.

My biggest hang up with Parkwood Estates is dining services. First, there are not enough servers to take meal orders in order for meals to flow smoothly. I don’t know the pay scale for servers and I don’t want to know. But I feel that if corporate loosened the purse strings and gave staff [not management] a decent increase in pay, it would attract more people. Secondly, some meals are difficult to eat or can’t be eaten because the meat is so tough. Some meals are dry because no gravy is supplied with the meat. Another hang up I have is with my rent. It increases 7% per year. It’s in my contract! This means that in a few years, assuming I’m still among the living, I will have to move because I won’t be able to afford Parkwood. In talking with some of the current residents, I feel that we were better served when [removed] was in control. With Sunrise having taken over on [date removed], services seem to be heading towards the trash can.
