Complete guide to nursing homes

Reston, Virginia

Nursing Homes

A nursing home facility offers residence to two or more individuals who are not related by marriage or by blood to the administrator. This type of establishment offers its occupants 24-hour care administered by registered nurses. These caregivers provide specialized care for people who cannot properly care for their needs because of mental or physical conditions.

Nursing homes are a familiar and easy living alternative for individuals 65 years or older, however nursing homes will routinely accept persons 55 and older which is unusual for other senior care types.A large portion of nursing home residents are persons who have incontinence issues, require assistance with daily tasks such as getting dressed, experience difficulty with vision and hearing, or have a physical or mental disability. Examples of amenities and servicesoffered at nursing homes might include social and recreational activities, patient and caregiver education, help with legal questions, and help with shopping and transportation. As a resident of a nursing home, you can expect the right to participate in activities, be free from discrimination, have protections against involuntary transfer or discharge, and get information on services and fees. A large number of residents tend to be single women who have less social support, and almost 50% of nursing home residents are over 85 years old. There are some services that may come at a cost to residents which can include a private room, unless medically needed, cosmetic and grooming items, and personal clothing.
