Learn More About Independent Living in Kingston, NY

This small yet vibrant town along Upstate New York’s majestic Hudson River brings big-city energy to the countryside. The state’s original capital with a history dating back to the early 1600s, Kingston has three historic districts with buildings from the city’s Colonial days that today house a range of art galleries, boutique shops, and new restaurants — all helping Kingston earn the recent title “the Hudson Valley’s creative capital.” Novelties like the Catskill Mountain Railroad and the Trolley Museum of New York, along with the ongoing urban trail project called the Kingston Greenline, highlight the city’s past and present as a forward-thinking transportation hub in one of the state’s more rural regions.

Independent living communities — also known simply as retirement communities — in Kingston are geared towards seniors who are able to live on their own, without daily assistance, and prefer to live among people their age. This usually means residents are self-sufficient and do not require hands-on care. Think of Kingston retirement communities as age-restricted (typically 55+) complexes, which provide organized activities, meal services, and transportation.

Cost of Independent Living in Kingston, NY

Kingston has a humid continental climate, meaning the city experiences four seasons with plenty of precipitation throughout the year. Summers are usually quite warm but are moderated by ocean breezes, whereas winters are cold, wet, and snowy. Given its relative proximity to the Atlantic coast, Kingston is prone to nor’easters with extreme amounts of snow. In warmer seasons, tropical storms and hurricanes sometimes occur, but they usually weaken in the North Atlantic’s cooler waters before reaching New York, or they divert eastward and miss the state. The average humidity level in the area is 69%, and humidity levels are often highest during September at about 75%.

Commuter rail service to New York City via Metro-North and Amtrak is available at the Rhinecliff–Kingston station across the Hudson River. The Catskill Mountain Railroad, which is based in Kingston, takes tourists on old-fashioned, themed train rides throughout the area.
