Arts, Culture, Entertainment, and Recreation

As a city, Greensboro is very dedicated to promoting local arts and culture. Built in 1927, the Carolina Theatre of Greensboro is a performing arts theater that puts on shows from local, national, and international troupes. The theater is the home of the Greensboro Ballet, the Community Theatre of Greensboro, the Livestock Players Musical Theatre, the Greensboro Youth Symphony, and a variety of other local performing arts groups. Many of these groups perform during the city’s annual OPUS Concert series and during the “Music for a Sunday Evening in the Park” concert series. The longest running performance art group in the city is the Community Theatre of Greensboro which has presented Broadway plays and musicals for over 45 years. Another way that the city celebrates the arts is through the Greensboro Mural Project which provides community members the opportunity to create public murals on social issues. The Greensboro Cultural Center is home to over 25 visual and performing arts groups. The center has five art galleries, a sculpture garden, rehearsal space, restaurant and an outdoor amphitheater. The Mattye Reed African American Heritage Collection hosts one of the largest collections of African culture in the country with over 3,500 pieces from across Africa and the Carribean. One of the more peculiar museums in the city is the Elsewhere Collaborative. This interactive, living museum is based out of a former thrift store in downtown Greensboro.
