Our Experience
The food could be improved, some dishes are not so good. Fruits would be a good option for lunch and dinner. The elevator often goes down and my mom does need the elevator to go to the cafeteria. Overall though, the facility is nice, airy and open, lots of natural daylight, high public area ceilings which are lacking in other facilities I've been to. I would let other families know that there is a one-time fee of $[removed]k + the 1st months rent. There is no telephone landline, wifi and basic cable included, apartment is unfurnished, move in was okay.

My loved one was a resident at The Ivy at Hawaii Kai. The staff at this facility were wonderful and kind. The meals were great. The bathroom cleaning could be more as needed, instead of just once a week. Overall, the workers were wonderful! I would recommend The Ivy to family and friends.

Glad my dad moved to The Ivy.
My dad is really happy there. The meals are really good, which is unusual for these types of places. The apartments are nice, and it's a really nice value for the price and the location. The property is really beautiful. And the nursing staff has been awesome.

Overall very beautiful room and view. Very helpful staff and friendly. Private nursing staff were excellent. The food was awful. My mom didn't find much that she liked in the menu. It was too big.

Not sure what happened. Loved visiting my Aunt when she lived here but the staff seem to have given up. Not sure if it’s the new company that took over but things aren’t the same. The new Assistant Manager and the Manager of the nurses rub me the wrong way. The staff all look uncomfortable when they walk by.

She said the food was very chewy and hard to eat and not particularly great - she is not super picky with her food either so that says a lot. Overall the experience has not been the best for her.

We would move in there!
APFM was very helpful in working with us and getting us into Holiday Hawai'i Kai Retirement. Response was great, within hours they were able to schedule a tour even during peak time of Covid. We were able to get our loved one in within days. Very flexible and turned out to be the best option, extremely patient. Very understanding of residents especially new residents with initial move in and getting them comfortable with the community.

Hawai'i Kai does not use their budget well
If you can find a community within your budget, then go for it! My family had a particular budget and if there was anything else available, I would have looked elsewhere. When you go to interview these places, I'd advise you to visit a few times, and show up at (random) times that a tour isn't scheduled. They built this place up big during our tour/interview. Take your time while observing the community and avoid listening to the hype about things. They have a hard time keeping staff and for a while they didn't have enough drivers to take people out. The driving schedule is difficult to get your name on and to even get picked up. Residents say they wait hours after an appointment has been finished to be picked back up. I also got wind of some financial troubles they are having there. It's an ok place, but my loved one isn't the only person complaining about food and services not being the quality they should be for the amount of money. Activities are very few, and I don't feel that they can answer my loved ones questions. They are not very helpful at the front desk. I am glad he's somewhere where he can ask other residents for help if he needs it. But that help is not being provided by the people who work there. It seems like they are on their own there.

My Grandchildren Said I Want to Live Here
This comforting, friendly and lovely community has scenic waterfalls and fountains. The residences are surrounded with beautiful flowers and greenery. There is a heated saltwater swimming pool. I’m addition to other private services there is also a medical clinic within the campus. What a wonderful place to live.

A Place for Mom has scored The Ivy at Hawaii Kai 8.5 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
