I would say that they are okay. Just okay honestly. I have to say that when we were looking they made it sound a little different than what they really do but they are 3 miles from me and my siblings so it was very convenient.

A great facility
Everyone at The Addison made mom's transition to memory care so smooth. She has adjusted and doing much better than her last facility. [name removed] walked me through ever step of the way before taking residency. [name removed] is awesome as is her staff. Very friendly and responsive when I need to ask a question. I finally have a piece of mind and can sleep at night knowing mom is safe.

Compassion and respect.
I was referred to The Addison of Fuquqay from A Place for Mom. From the initial phone call then my meeting with [name removed], I knew it was perfect for mom. [name removed], is right there with anything/issues that may arise and always keeps me informed. I have recommended the facility to a friend going through the same for her husband as my mom. All the staff is awesome.

The staff were very helpful throughout mom’s stay. They reached out to me with information about what treatments they thought she should get. As well as a lot of advice on when it was time for hospice. I would definitely recommend The Addison of Fuquay Varina to others. They were kind and compassionate and helped my mom as best they could.

Our family had an in person tour with The Addison and the patients and staff seemed happy. The staff seemed caring, compassionate, nice facility, could hear and see staff members interacting as we toured. I probably would have chosen The Addison if traffic at 40/42 wasn't such a headache

Not recommended
My loved one is a resident at The Addison of Fuquay Varina and I would not recommend this facility to others. There is a very high turnover of staff and administration. It's hard to get to know anyone who is invested. My loved one isn't clean, isn't dressed in her own clothes and her bed linens aren't cleaned. They don't answer the phone, don't follow through on medical recommendations and they lose my loved one's laundry all the time. Over and over. They changed the whole pricing and care structure after we signed the contract, to the point we can't afford it for as long as she'll need care- and denied they were doing it so we couldn't even plan.

Disastrous Experience
Horrible experience. My brother was sent away in 48 hours due to aggressive behavior because they did not medicate him properly. Charged a [name removed] community fee that they will not give back. Charged me for a week for his room because one pair of sweatpants was still there. Communication was absolutely awful, almost non existent

Memory Care for Mom.
We picked this community, because it was close to our home so was easier to visit and check on MIL on a daily basis. For the memory care, this was a good fit for our situation. The tour was nice and detailed. I was shown both sides, memory care and the care for non-memory issues.

Know your family members rights and investigate ratings by the State before you make a decision.
Since my Mom was last there in December 2021, I can only base my comments on the 4 months she was there. The place was clean. The staff who provided direct services to Mom were nice. They community did not have enough staff. I saw no activities being done for residents and I was there every week at different times. I think that there has been a change in Executive Director so hopefully communication with family members is better. I felt like I was disrespected when I asked about concerns for my Mom. I was notified only once when she fell. She kept telling me she was scared but couldn't tell me why. I was POA for her, so I hired an advocate to help me visit her and observe the facility. I asked for medical records but was denied the records. Mom's last day [date removed] and was sick. She entered hospital on [date removed]. She was sick with pneumonia and sepsis. She passed away in hospital on [date removed]. BOTTOM LINE. Ask plenty of questions. Visit other facilities. If possible, talk with residents and family members...not anyone who has been recommended by facility. Don't make a hasty decision.

Leadership transition caused a definite decline in care and accountability.
The Addison started out great but unfortunately it didn't end as well as I hoped. Staff was wonderful but leadership transition caused a definite decline in care and accountability. When the executive director and activities director quit, there were no real services for a couple of months. And then when they were replaced, limited services and focus was in painting and rearranging and changing offices and they ignored patients. My personal complaint is the meds were not given as directed but put in the computer as given. Plus when hospice joined Mom's team, The Addison had a hands off policy for Mom's care. They would defer to hospice or call me. Regarding The Addison staff ....those who care are slowly quitting because of not being respected for what they do. There are some amazing health care people there, but they are not cared for by leadership. The food is the worst - just AWFUL. I don't know what else these elderly have to look forward to except a decent meal, which they are not getting here. Activities went down to nothing for two months. Or more. With no activities director, the remaining staff do their best but they can't plan, run activities and go get residents and do it all. Afternoon snacks were removed. The things we were told would be part of the deal are not in effect. Transportation is not available. When leadership gets focus on residents and not on making the place look pretty it will get better. It's a very nice place. And didn't need new paint. They needed to do us on residents to make up for the two months they are ignored. But they work in and through the halls, change things around, and often ignore the residents.

I Would Not Recommend This Facility To Any Family
My family and I had an okay experience with The Addison of Fuquay Varina. There was no follow up with the family on our questions or concerns. It would be nice to see better follow up with the families of residents in the future. The community provided meals to the residents.

Apparently The Addison of Fuquay Varina is understaffed. I can call and call and call; no one answers when you leave a message and they don't get back to you. You're wondering what is going on because you cant reach your loved one. I can't reach my loved one on their cell phone and it's been a few days. I just need someone to respond and say, "We've seen your loved one and they're okay". The closest person to my loved one is me, and I'm a couple hours away. That would be a several hour roundtrip just to make sure they're okay. They don't have activities. I asked my loved one if they ever go out to restaurants or take bus somewhere, and they said no. I know it's not my loved one because I asked a staff member if they had an activity list when I visited and the lady said, "No we don't." My loved one is completely disgusted with the food. They don't eat there; they go out to eat all the time at fast food places, which is not healthy for them. The most important thing is communication, and there is absolutely no communication from them. I'd like to see a monthly newsletter or an activity list so that I can push my loved one to participate. If you're not going to answer the phone, at least call us back when we leave a message, and it needs to be within so many hours and not a week later. I've left two or three messages and have yet to receive an answer from any of them, and it's been a couple months.

The Addison of Fuquay Varina
Our experience here was a nightmare. They have a lack of communication with management and they refused my access to my mom's medical records while she was in their facility; I was POA. There were several medication errors. I finally hired an advocate for Mom since I didn't live in Raleigh. They encountered problems with management also. I was in the process of moving Mom to a new place in [date removed]. She was sick when I picked her up and had to be hospitalized. She died in hospital. I have talked DHHS and they said I had a year to file my complaint about care my Mom received. I plan to pursue. It wasn't so much the care, rather the lack of communication and the management. I would come to pick my mom up and sometimes the staff didn't even know I was coming. They've mentioned to me that administration doesn't really tell them things. It wasn't just me, it seemed like a big issue while she was there. I'd run into other family members who had loved ones there, and they were having the same experience as me, so I knew it wasn't just me. My mom was very sick when I picked her up at Christmas and she passed on [date removed]. They didn't want to give me the records, but I finally got them from their in-house doctors by going around them. She had been seen by the doctor(s) on the Wednesday before I picked her up on Friday. The doctors and the staff thought she had a UTI, but they never ran a test and she wasn't sent with medications when I picked her up. Her UTI had turned into sepsis, in addition to her having a heart attack and pneumonia. I wasn't expecting anything like that and if I would have known before she left, I would have gotten her a prescription to at least take care of her UTI. This entire thing was very upsetting. When I went back, I told them I'd like my moms record, just to see what they'd say because I already had it. They said they couldn't give it to me, because they had to get it cleared through legal and corporate. I thought that was outrageous! I know this was at a time when we were coming out of Covid and I realize not having enough help or not being fully staffed can cause things to go down hill really quick, I understand that. It just was not a good experience at all and I've told people in the community and those who visited her from her church, and they were all very aware. It's not just me, it's known and it's frustrating. Other people may have had good experiences, but this was ours. I know sometimes it's a role reversal with you and a parent, and I thought that maybe I was becoming the "helicopter mom" who was expecting too much. Maybe I was being unrealistic because I've never gone through this, which is why I hired an advocate. The advocate worked with several others facilities and they just couldn't believe what was going on here. They tried their best to monitor what was going on. I felt I was vindicated on that part, as I knew that it wasn't just me and that there are major issues there. Other people may not have had the same issues I did, it just wasn't a good situation for me. This was my first encounter with having to do this, so I wasn't sure if my expectation was too high. Communication is important for the family to feel safe and at ease. In the process, I thought it was clean and I didn't come in smelling any strong odors. I didn't see any abuse towards the residents. There had been a few people who had gotten out of their wheelchair(s) and fallen. They were getting them up and talking to them about the importance of staying seated. The staff were not harsh, they helped them and primarily it was the front office with the issues, not so much the staff, as it was management not wanting to communicate with us. At one point, I thought maybe it was because I was a female, but my brother had the same issue and he wasn't receiving any answers either. The DHHS - Department of Health and Human Services, gives them zero out of five stars on their DHHS rating system. Inspectors came by when my mom was there and since then, they have been given the lowest score alongside a few others in the county. If I had seen or heard about that beforehand, we would not have chose this place. When you walk in, you see a sanitation rating of 90-ish%, but you won't realize it's not an overall rating of the community, it's tied to their food handling service. I went online and I saw the details of their DHHS rating and it specifies medication errors, in which they were written up for. It did not make me feel any better seeing that. Whoever is searching for senior living needs to do their due diligence and look at several resources and different feedback platforms before you make your decision.

As Good As Anyone
I would recommend the community to others for their loved ones. Some of the staff in the memory care unit are able to pay a little extra attention to my loved one. The nice thing is they have gotten to know me and know my name. The staff are always communicating with me about my loved one if something happens in the community.

A Place for Mom has scored The Addison of Fuquay Varina 8 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
