About the facility
Marycrest

Marycrest offers senior living options in Livonia, Michigan, a pleasant suburban community next to Detroit. Livonia is considered one of the best places to raise a family in the Detroit metropolitan area because of its safe neighborhoods, green parks, and excellent shopping opportunities. Most of the population is made up of retirees and young families, making this area a logical choice for anyone looking for a comfortable place to settle down.

Landscaped grounds, wide streets, and spotless new exteriors greet residents and visitors as they arrive. The emphasis on design continues inside where the rooms are tastefully decorated. Residents benefit from the large size of the facility, as there are plenty of spacious rooms, common areas, and amenities.

Seniors won't get bored at Marycrest. They can spend their days in the library or the woodshop. They can participate in fitness classes at the gym or tend to their own garden in the community raised beds. Activity directors arrange daily schedules for the seniors to keep them active, and these often include transportation to events off campus. Everything is done to keep seniors as active and engaged as possible.

While Marycrest used to offer nursing care, it now exclusively provides independent living and assisted...

Very nice for indepent living and assisted
I know they used to have a skilled nursing or whatever it is called; but they no longer have that, and just offer assisted and independent now. They have a new executive director, too, from what I gather. Our family had a good experience. The apartments (when mom could still live on her own and get around) were very nice, clean, and came with things like cable and underground parking. When she was in assisted, they took good care of her. Very responsive to her needs and whenever she pushed her call button. The food was good, and the physical therapists were very patient and encouraging. It sounds like their nursing wasn't great; but they are definitely good at the other types of senior living; so it's probably best that they are concentrated just on that now.

Disgusting place
Both of my 87 yr old parents sent here after being St Marys hospital. A complete nightmare to put it mild. They were both neglected from the time they got there. Aides extremely rough, rude and humiliating care if that's considered care. Definitely do NOT take loved ones there. Neglect is abuse. Both parents passed within weeks after being there. Luckily dad was sent back to hospital with severe dehydration and I removed my mom and took her home. Unfortunately it was too late.

Mom ended up in a coma
My Mother was at Marycrest for rehabilitation after a stroke and some other medical complications. She was stable and was there to get her physical strength improved. It was in her records and the staff was aware she needed to wear a bipap nightly due to COPD. Her care there was interrupted by a brief stay at a hospital, but then she was sent right back to Marycrest to continue her physical therapy. I was present the day she was readmitted and was assured by staff that the bipap would be put on my mother that night. Less than 24 hours after being readmitted, we got a call that my mom was found unresponsive and was being rushed to the hospital. We asked Marycrest if my mother had her bipap put on before bed. We were told she was not hooked up to the machine because they could not find the mask to the machine, so they just did not put the machine on her. As a result, my mom had very high levels of CO2 and was in a coma. She ended up on a ventilator for 5 days and died a little over a week later. Please be very cautious if choosing this facility.

Abysmal, Inhumane Service --> Furious niece
Do NOT place a loved family member here if you care about them. My uncle was placed here from the hospital (73) and we called every day for 4 days looking to get information about him and NEVER RECEIVED A CALL BACK. No one returned calls even after we were assured by the front desk that we would get a call. Never happened... until we got a call that he had passed. Absolutely inhuman experience. I hope no one else has to experience the level of frustration, anxiety and sadness that this facility created for my family. And I can only imagine how terrible my poor uncle's final days were at the facility.

This place is not safe ! Do not send your parents there !!!
If you love your parents like I do, do not send them to this place. My 87 year old father was brought there from Beaumont to rehab after hip replacement surgery. We were told he could not have a walker and that the only time he could use one was during physical therapy one hour a day. The other 23 hours they expected him to just sit in a wheel chair or lay in bed. If that had happened he would likely never walk again. The staff has little to no training and no knowledge of hip precautions. Two of the 3 hip precautions were broken in the first hour there when they expected him to transfer himself from the wheelchair they insisted he use, to the toilet. The aids are very rough when moving patients and pay no regard to surgical sites or pain level. When checking his skin for breaks, the nurse took all of his dignity away by stripping him completely naked and making him lay there while she went over his body. He was mortified. He was there for 24 hours and they gave NONE of his medications including blood thinners and pain meds. Physical therapists also seemed to know little of hip precautions as they put him directly on a machine that broke the cardinal rule that the hip cannot pass the 90 degree angle. Combine all that with a lack of any pain meds and was in agony. I have removed him and brought him home but be warned this place is God awful and a danger to our loved ones.

Would you want your parents treated like this
I dont even know where to start. There is just a lack of compassion and care here. They need training. They need supervisors. They don't have either of these things. These are human beings. These are our parents. Think about if you would want your parents treated like this.

Not a good place
This isnot a good place to take someone you love. People just seem to go threw the motions and they don't really care. that is obvious if people care, and these people don't. They left my mom in bed even though there was no reason for that because they dont put in any effort. When I asked them they got her up, but what if I didn't come. And she was soaking wet and she had wounds and had to see their wound care doctor who doesn't know what he is doing. [name removed]

DO NOT USE THIS PLACE.
By far one of the worst facilities in Livonia. Expect your parent or loved one to sit for hours without being checked or changed. They claim a patient is supposed to be lifted out of their bed every 2 hours, Good luck with that there. We were seeing 5 hours plus ON A GOOD DAY and we were lucky if they sat him up ONE time on most days. As for their physical therapy department, expect the least amount of attention and work possible from their staff who is basically on their cell phones most of the time as it is. They will put the patient in front of a machine and walk away. No monitoring or guidance. If it was not for my mom to sit and baby sit him there, they would have messed up his medicine several times and given him the wrong doses at the wrong time. She corrected them on a daily basis and had to literally beg them to do anything and TIP the nurses to get them to do things such as change him. If your press the call button, be ready to wait for an hour or more. Do yourself and your loved ones a favor and AVOID THIS PLACE. Do your homework and read the reviews. You will be glad you did. This is one facility that only cares about the dollar signs, not your loved one

Terribly disappointed
I don't know how this place gets five stars. The help they do have must have management over a barrel because they do nothing. Walk through there sometimes, especially people who are there long term. They smell because no one changes them. It's not that they're busy (working). It's that theyre busy talking on their phones, talking to each other (and not about patients - about clothes, vacations. In the meantime they don't notice that (or don't care) that people aren't getting their food, aren't going back to their rooms when they're asking over and over. it is so sad. And don't be fooled by their ratings on other websites. Look at it closely. The workers rate their own facility and the manager knows it because she says great. Who rates themselves? I want to know how other people rate them. And I rate them low. Glad we weren't in rehab for long. And the response to a lot of postings is say Call Our Director. I talked to her. She does nothing about her lazy employees who don't care. Go somewhere else.

Very disappointed
Incredibly beautiful and modern rehabilitation home. Incredibly lazy and ignorant staff. I guess these folks that work here (and I use the term work extremely lightly) feel that the great decor make up for having to actually take care of people. I seriously cannot understand how anyone can fail this miserably when lives are at stake. My advice ....Go to the far western suburbs for care of your loved ones. The further west, the better. The state needs to shut this place down.

Horrible nightmare
If you think you will get care and recover in this place, think again! I still have nightmares over my lack of care and compassion. I was totally helpless a after undergoing painful surgery for a severely broken ankle was unable to move. I had to rely on the care of so called nurses and aids who never cared when I rang the bell. They could be heard laughing on their cell phones or playing games. It was a ghost town at night not a soul to be seen. Imagine the helpless feeling of needing to use the bathroom, ringing the buzzer repeatedly with no response . Imagine the indignity of sitting in your own urine for hours at a time! My family complained to the director of the facility but no one gave a damn. Ended up hiring very expensive private duty nurses. Get the picture folks??

Great Therapist, Awful nursing/Care
My mother was here for a couple weeks in Jan 2019 after a critical illness, The PT and OT were wonderful and I would recommend them however, the nursing staff and care at this facility is awful. My mother fell in the bathroom on the second day she was there. Hit her head and hurt her back. My mother's caregiver was there at the time. Two aids rushed in, didn't check to see if she was bleeding, had broken bones etc. picked her up and put her in a wheelchair. Left the room. Nurse came in sometime later, again, didn't check on my mom just told our caregiver she needed to file a report. Long story short, despite assurances from the "on call nursing supervisor" that protocol required regular and frequent neurological testing in the first several hours after a fall, NO ONE came into my mother's room except to bring her a Tylenol requested by our caregiver and to bring her nighttime meds. I've been promised numerous times by many staff at Marycrest that they would call and discuss what happened. 1 1/2 months later, I just received a call from the Director of nursing, stating that they followed protocol according to the report. How can you conduct frequent neurological tests without coming into my moms room for 8 hrs except for meds? Do not send your loved one here! Do not be fooled by the beautiful decor. BTW my mother has recovered from her fall and is back home despite the terrible care at Marycrest.

The people here seem like they don't care about the patients. They don't want to hear complaints. They don't want to supervise. The let the assistants do anything they want to do. They talk on the phone and ignore patients. It's not what I expected when I brought my dad here for rehab, and I would not come back again. Thank goodness what he had wasn't serious and we didn't have to stay long. It was upsetting to see how people were treated, and I don't know how my dad would have done if family members weren't here CONSTANTLY. I don't know how they get a five star rating.

Beware of Mary crest Nursing Home
I was in Mary crest Nursing Home in Livonia Michigan for one month. Because of their lack of care I was put on a wound vac and it weakened the muscles in my lower back. I remember ringing the buzzer again and again and nobody ever came and I yelled to them that I had just had back surgery and I was not able to get myself up off the bed unassisted but that fell on deaf ears. My room was kitty corner from the nurse's station and I could hear them laughing and joking around they just totally ignored me. It was a dreadful experience being in there they were extremely rude people. And a year-and-a-half after I left there I get a call from a collection agency saying my insurance did not pay well again they feel they're also because I did not even have that kind of insurance my insurance I paid that right when I left there. A Place for Mom has scored Marycrest 8 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
