Don’t let advertisements and commercials fool you into thinking online dating websites are only for younger generations.

Read more about how tech has changed dating for older adults and how online dating is now a popular option for single millennials and baby boomers alike.

Facts About Online Dating for Older Adults

According to eHarmony, more than 40 million Americans use online dating websites, and the number of 55 to 64-year-olds who date online has increased 6% from 2013-2015. Additionally, a Pew Research study reveals that:

  • 80% of Americans who have used online dating say it’s a good way to meet people
  • 62% agree that online dating helps people find a better match
  • 61% think online dating is easier and more efficient than other forms of meeting people

Whether you’re just getting your feet wet again in the dating world or have been dating for some time, technology makes it easier than ever to meet new people with similar interests.

Getting Started with Online Dating

eHarmony and Match.com may be the most popular online dating sites, but they’re hardly the only options. There are dozens of sites, from the niche — like FarmersOnly.com — to the over-50 crowd, including SeniorPeopleMeet.comStitch.net and SeniorBlackPeopleMeet.com. Feel out a few different sites, reading over their company missions and how their systems works. From there, you may want to join one or several depending on your dating goals.

While each online dating site has different guidelines and requirements, many feature a dating preferences questionnaire to match you with other members, as well as a profile where you’ll add information about yourself and what you’re looking for. People often make the mistake of writing in their profile what they think will seem appealing. If your idea of a perfect Saturday is watching movies at home rather than camping in the great outdoors, be honest about it.

The more truthful you are about your interests and preferences, the better chance you’ll have of finding a good match.

Staying Safe When Online Dating

The online world can seem like the Wild West, especially for older adults who didn’t grow up with the tech we have today. Even if you feel experienced when it comes to dating, online safety is important.

While most legitimate dating sites take user safety seriously, there are a few tried-and-true guidelines that can help you feel safer when setting up profiles or meeting someone in person who you met online:

  1. Get to know each other online first. Take time to learn about someone before agreeing to meet with them in person. For safety purposes, most dating sites suggest keeping your conversation limited to the site’s messaging system, as opposed to personal email, before agreeing to meet in person.
  2. Meet in a public location. For your first few dates, stay in a public area, whether it’s a restaurant or museum. Don’t feel pressured to reveal your home address until you feel comfortable.
  3. Protect your personal information. When exchanging messages with another site member, don’t share your home address, Social Security number, or bank information.
  4. Run a Google search. The internet makes it easy to learn about a person before meeting them. Search the person’s name on Google or Facebook to check for any inconsistencies in their stories. Remember, someone can do the same with you, so you may want to see what comes up when you search your name.
  5. Trust your intuition. If someone’s messages strike you as odd, such as asking you for money or refusing to meet in person, cut off communication and report the person to the dating site.

Online dating as an older adult may seem intimidating at first and it’s not the best platform for everyone. However, if you’re interested in discovering a new way to meet new people, be it for friendship or love, test out a few of the popular sites.

Remember to follow these helpful safety guidelines and good luck on the dating scene!
