Argentum (formerly The Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA)) Hero Award honors “extraordinary individuals who serve older adults in senior living communities” across America.
A Place for Mom recently caught up with Sarah to congratulate her on her prestigious award and to learn more about her work with seniors. Here’s a little about Sarah and her role in the senior living industry:
Talk with a Senior Living Advisor
Our advisors help 300,000 families each year find the right senior care for their loved ones.
Q: How did you end up working in the senior living / senior care industry?
A: I started my journey here at The Woods when I was fifteen years old as a dietary aid. I than became a pantry cook and than a dining room supervisor. After that, I joined the Activities team and have been in the Activities Department ever since.
Q: You were selected as a winner because you champion quality of life for senior residents. How do you do this?
A: I start by getting to know the resident. What the resident likes and dislikes, where they grew up, what they did for a living, and so on. I than take that and apply it to the activities. I look at it as I learn from them and I hope they learn from me. This is their home and I want to help make it as comfortable as I can and for them to continue their quality of life.
Q: What is a memorable moment you’ve had with a resident or family of a resident?
A: I have had so many memorable moments but there is one that really sticks out. On a nice warm day I took our memory care residents out on the porch and we talked and talked all morning. We told stories, talked about how beautiful the day was, and learned a little more about each other. At the end of our discussion I said to the residents, “I hope you had an amazing morning like I did. You guys give me so much, that I will cherish the rest of my life.” Than a resident said, “Honey, you give us something every day that we will cherish!” Another resident said, “You give us more than you know.” It was just a heart warming day, like most of my days here at The Woods!
Q: What inspires you to do what you do for seniors to help the fight against ageism?
A: What inspires me is the residents! They have such beautiful life stories and they inspire me every day with their stories. This is not just my job, these residents are my family! They deserve the world. They have done so much in their lives and I want to do as much as I can to make the rest of their lives as good as I would want mine.
