Ari Seth Cohen’s documentary film version of his Advanced Style blog is now in theaters and celebrates the bold, stylish women of New York City who are over the age of 60. Learn more about why you should see this inspiring film.
Ari Seth Cohen has a great affinity for aging women. He was very close to both of his grandmothers, and all one has to do is explore the contents of his blog, companion book and now documentary to feel the respect and adoration he has for stylish older women. Cohen told The New York Times: “They don’t have a job, they don’t have to impress their bosses, their children, their lovers,” he said. In dressing, “they have no one to please but themselves.”
Cohen started his blog by photographing images of older New Yorkers that he found creative in their choice of attire, but has also snaps shots while on trips outside of New York, exclaiming that, “I guess Advanced Style follows me wherever I travel!”
In the movie, Cohen and film director Lina Plioplyte shares the stories of a selection of women in New York, capturing their spirit, fashion-sense and their outlook on aging. Moviegoers are treated to an intimate portrait of these women who are “challenging conventional ideas about beauty, aging and Western’s culture’s increasing obsession with youth.”

If the idea is that with age comes happiness and confidence in the way of truly finding and understanding yourself, then these women are definitely putting a dent in ageism. On his blog, Cohen says to “respect your elders and let these ladies and gents teach you a thing or two about living life to the fullest.” Some of the inspiring words these women will share in this gem of a movie include:
“At one time I had no self-confidence and I didn’t think I could do anything. I came into my own about 10 years ago.”
“I feel the same as I did when I was 18, but I have fewer cares.”
“I never wanted to look young. I wanted to look great.”
“I think good style improves the environment for everybody.”
“There’s no time limit to anything. When you look good, you look good.”
The Advanced Style movie opened in New York City on September 26, 2014 and can be viewed in select cities across the U.S. and also internationally throughout October, and minimally in November and December.
