Assisted Living

Assisted living communities have the luxury of a sense of community as well as individual assistance. Assisted living communities commonly provide care supervision, support with daily activities, and outings for recreational activity. In certain situations, communities may offer continuing care, nursing, or respite. In Washington, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $66,000 . Washington has specific regulations related to this type of community. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (Department) licenses this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with ADLs, communities choose to provide certain health support services, general responsibility for each resident, and basic personal care services. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as mental illness, an initial comprehensive exam including medical history , level of personal care needs, and activities and service preferences. Staff members obtain training in a variety of areas. These areas include safety training (3 hours), nurse delegation and core diabetes, basic training (70 hours), and continuing education. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include nourishing and palatable meals adjusted to meet individual preferences to the extent reasonably possible, practitioner, not exceeding more than 14 hours between the evening meal and breakfast , and a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include resident self-administration of medication, residents must state whether they will receive medication assistance or medication administration services, and medication administration provided through nurse delegation. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program–Community Options Program Entry System (COPES).
