Assisted living communities offer supervision, healthcare, and social opportunities to people around 65 years old. Assisted living communities frequently offer care supervision, opportunities for recreational activity, and help with transportation and appointments. In certain instances, communities may offer skilled nursing care, continuing care, or respite. In Washington, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $66,000 . The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (Department) licenses this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include not exceeding more than 14 hours between the evening meal and breakfast , practitioner, nourishing and palatable meals adjusted to meet individual preferences to the extent reasonably possible, and a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of subjects. These areas include orientation (2 hours), First-aid and CPR, nurse delegation and core diabetes, and HIV/AIDS. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as mental illness, significant known behaviors or symptoms that may cause concern or require special care, activities and service preferences, and level of personal care needs. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program–Community Options Program Entry System (COPES).This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include promote each resident’s health, safety, and well-being consistent with the resident negotiated care plan, communities choose to provide certain health support services, general responsibility for each resident, and assistance with ADLs. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration, residents must state whether they will receive medication assistance or medication administration services, and resident self-administration of medication.
