Assisted living communities administer supervision, care, and social events to individuals who are around 65 years old. The types of service provided often involve help with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. In some situations, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, hospice, or skilled nursing. The state of Virginia has specific regulations associated with this type of community. The Virginia Department of Social Services licenses this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal and health care services, Promote the resident s involvement with appropriate community resources, Provide protection, guidance, and supervision, and Assessing residents for whom restraints are in us. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver program–Virginia Alzheimer s Assisted Living. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include a licensed health care professionall must annually review all residents medications, The community must have a medication management plan that is reviewed and approved by the Department., and Medications may be administered by licensed individuals or by medication aides . This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three nutritious meals must be provided each day, Periodic oversight of special diets by a dietitian or nutritionist, and bedtime and between meal snacks must be available. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Staff are required to obtain education in a variety of areas. These areas include confidential treatment of personal information, procedures for detecting suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation, Specific duties and requirements of their positions, and hand-washing techniques, standard precautions, and infection risk reduction behavior. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as Initial comprehensive assessment and develop a care plan with the input of the resident, family, direct care staff, case manager, and health care providers, as relevant.
