An assisted living community is a residential living community which provides care, assistance, and support to independent seniors who do not need skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities usually offer outings for recreational activity, assistance with appointments and transportation, and care supervision. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer dementia care, hospice, or skilled nursing care. Tennessee maintains specific rules related to this type of community. The Tennessee Department of Health, Board for Licensing Health Care communities supervises this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include the ability and readiness to intervene if crises arise, part-time intermittent nursing care, laundry services, and assistance with activities of daily living. Staff members obtain training in a variety of fields. These areas include nutrition, food service, financial management, and healthy lifestyles. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as physical assessment, assistance with health services, arrangements for visits by or to health care providers, and recreational and social activities. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 managed care Long-Term Services and Supports CHOICES program.In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include opening dosage packaging, residents may self-administer medication, and observing the resident while taking medication. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the food must be adapted to residents habits, preferences, and and physical abilities, No more than 14 hours must elapse between the evening and morning meals, must provide three meals a day that meet acceptable and/or prescribed diet standards, and must provide additional nourishment and/or snacks to residents with special dietary needs or upon request.
