Assisted living communities administer recreational activities, supervision, and personal care to individuals who are around 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities often provide support with daily activities, care supervision, and aid with appointments and transportation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, skilled nursing care, or Alzheimer’s care. The state of Tennessee maintains specific rules associated with this kind of community. The Tennessee Department of Health, Board for Licensing Health Care communities regulates this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminding residents to take their medications, observing the resident while taking medication, and assistance with reading labels. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as arrangements for visits by or to health care providers, assistance with health services, physical assessment, and recreational and social activities. Staff must receive education in a number of fields. These areas include fire safety disaster preparedness, health care management, healthy lifestyles, and applicable state rules and regulations. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the food must be adapted to residents habits, preferences, and and physical abilities, must provide additional nourishment and/or snacks to residents with special dietary needs or upon request, No more than 14 hours must elapse between the evening and morning meals, and must provide three meals a day that meet acceptable and/or prescribed diet standards. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 managed care Long-Term Services and Supports CHOICES program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, laundry services, medication administration, and the ability and readiness to intervene if crises arise. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room.
