Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer residential communities and assistance for people who may need support with things such as washing or cooking. Assisted living communities frequently offer care supervision, help with transit and appointments, and outings for social activity. In certain instances, communities may provide skilled nursing care, hospice, or Alzheimer’s care. The state of South Carolina maintains specific rules related to this type of community. The Board of Health and Environmental Control, Division of Health Licensing supervises this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include at least one structured recreation activity each day, assistance with ADLs, transportation, and medication assistance. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as recreational and social activities that are suitable, desirable, and important to the resident s well-being, dietary needs, assistance with ADLs for the resident, and assessing the extent of residents problems and needs. Staff are required to obtain education in a variety of subjects. These areas include use of restraints , emergency procedures, Care of persons specific to the physical/mental condition being cared for in the community, and medication management including storage, administration, receiving orders, securing medications, interactions, and adverse reactions.. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three meals and snacks that meet dietary needs and special menus are provided for those with special dietary needs . This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include administer routine medications, monitor blood sugar levels, and staff may self administer medications under licensed staff supervision. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. In total, there can be no more than 3 residents to a room.
