Assisted living communities offer residential communities and assistance to persons who require support with things such as mobility or dressing. Assisted living communities usually provide aid with appointments and transportation, supervision of care, and assistance with daily activities. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, “aging in place”, or skilled nursing care. In Rhode Island, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $52,500 . The state of Rhode Island has a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Department of Health, Office of Residences Regulation licenses this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment of each applicant s health, cognitive needs, preferences, and social accommodations. Staff members receive training in a variety of subjects. These areas include personal assistance, reporting, basic knowledge of aging related behaviors;, and assistance with medications. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration waiver program called the Rhode Island Comprehensive Demonstration that covers assisted living services. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, medication management, monitor residents recreational, social, and personal activities, and arrange for support services. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include provide a diet that is appropriate to the resident s medical regimen. and three balanced and varied meals each day.
