An assisted living community is a residential living community which administers care, assistance, and supervision to healthy individuals who are not in need of skilled nursing support. Services offered often include aid with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, continuing care, or nursing care. In Pennsylvania, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $40,020 . The state of Pennsylvania maintains specific regulations related to this type of community. Department of Human Services, Bureau of Human Services Licensing certifies this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include must provide three meals a day and meals must meet recommended dietary allowances established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as physical health exam, immunization history, allergies, and special health or dietary needs. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Staff must receive education in a number of areas. These areas include fire safety, emergency procedures, abuse and reporting requirements, and residents’ rights. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include 24-hour supervision, nutritious meals and snacks, assistance with unanticipated ADLs for a defined recovery period, and activities and socialization.
