Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which provides support, care, and supervision to healthy persons who do not need skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities usually offer care supervision, help with daily activities, and aid with appointments and transportation. In some situations, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, continuing care, or hospice. Ohio maintains specific rules related to this type of community. Ohio Department of Health supervises this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include verifying labels, reminders, and assistance opening and taking medication. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medical diagnoses, functional status assessment, medication review, and cognitive status review. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medication, activities, personal care, and medication administration. Staff must obtain training in a variety of subjects. These include: securing emergency assistance, residents rights, job responsibilities, and community procedures. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 8 residents and one bath or shower for every 8 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17.
