Assisted living communities provide oversight, social opportunities, and care to individuals who are about 65 years old. The services provided often involve help with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer hospice, “aging in place”, or nursing. Ohio maintains specific standards associated with this kind of community. Ohio Department of Health certifies this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision, personal care, intermittent nursing services, and assistance with self-administration of medication. Staff are required to obtain training in a variety of fields. These include: job responsibilities, residents rights, community procedures, and securing emergency assistance. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. There must be one bath or shower for every 8 residents and one toilet for every 8 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as functional status assessment, cognitive status review, medication review, and medical diagnoses. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance organizing medication, verifying labels, and handing medications to resident.
