An assisted living community is a residential community which provides supervision, aid, and support to healthy individuals who do not need skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities usually offer outings for leisurely activity, aid with daily activities, and aid with transit and appointments. In select cases, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, continuing care, or respite. The state of Ohio has specific rules related to this type of community. Ohio Department of Health regulates this type of community. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. The maximum occupancy is 4 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 8 residents and one bath or shower for every 8 residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication administration, intermittent nursing services, activities, and assistance with self-administration of medication. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance organizing medication, assistance opening and taking medication, and verifying labels. Staff must obtain training in a number of subjects. These areas include job responsibilities, residents rights, securing emergency assistance, and community procedures. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as cognitive status review, functional status assessment, health history, and psychical history.
