Manhattan is substantially more expensive, at roughly $12,000 per month in average costs, while Brooklyn is significantly cheaper. at an estimated $4,300 per month in average costs.[03]

Each borough has a unique feel and flavor of life, so it may be worth paying more to live in a borough that meets your unique preferences or has been your lifelong home.

How to pay for assisted living in the Bronx

As you begin exploring assisted living options, the costs can feel overwhelming. It’s important to know that many seniors begin paying for their long-term care through private funds and may transition to utilizing public funds and programs later.

Private pay options for Bronx assisted living

Private pay options for many seniors may include but are not limited to the following:

To explore payment options for seniors in the Bronx in greater detail, review the payment section on our NYC page or read through our guide to paying for long-term care.

Public pay options for Bronx assisted living

Seniors in the Bronx can also receive localized support with exploring public pay options by consulting the following resources:

Below you can learn more about specific public pay programs that may be available to older adults in the Bronx.

Can Medicare pay for assisted living in the Bronx?

As a federal health insurance program for people 65+, Medicare can cover some medical costs associated with assisted living care services for eligible Medicare participants. However, it cannot cover room and board expenses for Bronx seniors.

New York seniors should consult the New York State consumer guide to community-based long-term care to learn more about what Medicare may cover.

If an older adult in the Bronx needs further assistance or individualized help with Medicare, they can also contact a local Social Security Administration (SSA) office in the borough. Locations can be found on the Social Security Office Locator search portal. To utilize this search function, you’ll need to enter your ZIP code. Then, select “I Need Other Services” to view a list of locations in the area.

Can Medicaid pay for assisted living in the Bronx?

While it sounds similar to Medicare, Medicaid is a separate program. It’s a health insurance program for low-income people and is jointly funded by the state and federal governments. In the Bronx, this program is referred to as New York State Medicaid.

Like Medicare, Medicaid can’t cover the cost of room and board in assisted living communities in the Bronx.

However, eligible seniors may be able to cover some costs associated with assisted living through the Assisted Living Program (ALP). Note that older adults don’t necessarily have to qualify for Medicaid to utilize ALP. Program restrictions may limit how many elder New Yorkers can participate in the ALP.

For further assistance with Medicaid, seniors can contact any of the following Medicaid offices located in the Bronx:

Can VA benefits pay for assisted living in the Bronx?

More than 37,000 veterans — almost 18% of NYC’s veteran population — call the Bronx home.[04] While the VA doesn’t typically pay for room and board directly, veterans, veteran spouses, and surviving spouses may be able to utilize other programs to pay for expenses related to assisted living.

Eligible military-connected seniors in the Bronx may able to utilize the following VA programs to pay for assisted living related expenses:

  • VA Aid and Attendance benefit
  • VA Pension
  • Survivors Pension
  • VA disability compensation
  • VA health benefits

For older adults who need assistance or would like individualized help with VA benefits, they can contact the NYC Department of Veterans’ Services — Bronx location for local support.

Seniors can also reach out to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs through their phone line, chatbot, or AskVA portal.

Veteran service organizations (VSO) located in the Bronx, such as the American Legion Leonard H. Hawkins Post 156, may also offer support to veterans seeking to understand and apply to VA benefits. In some cases, the closest VSO may be in another borough. Manhattan has a large number of VSOs.

If you don’t qualify for VA programs and benefits or chose not to pursue VA assistance, you may still be able to pay less than your civilian peers. Some communities may honor veterans and their families by offering a one-time or recurring veteran or military discount. It’s a good idea to inquire about this during a tour of a prospective community.

What to expect from assisted living in the Bronx

Each New York City borough has a unique flavor of life, and the Bronx is no exception. This borough attracts newcomers to America but also remains a lifelong home for many native New Yorkers. As of 2021, more than a third of Bronx residents were foreign-born, while more than half of Bronx residents were born in New York State.[02]

The Bronx features a diverse population, which includes more than half of its population identifying as Hispanic in 2020. There’s also a quickly expanding Asian population in the borough: It grew by more than 40 percent from 2010 to 2020. This diversity brings with it lively cultural events, ethnic food spots, and a plethora of musical performances.[05]

Seniors in the Bronx can expect assisted living to vary depending on the neighborhood that a community is located in. The neighborhood vibes and structure differ significantly between what locals refer to as the south Bronx and the north Bronx. Currently, all A Place for Mom’s partner communities are situated in the north Bronx.

The south Bronx vs. the north Bronx

As you may have guessed, the south Bronx is located in the southern portion of the borough, closest to Manhattan and Queens. Since the 1970s, some sections of the south Bronx have experienced an urban revitalization. These areas offer a trendy, up-and-coming feel similar to Brooklyn in many neighborhoods, but with residential buildings closer in density to Manhattan or other inner-city cores in the U.S.

While the exact boundaries between the south Bronx and the north Bronx depend upon who you ask, the north Bronx is largely considered to be the area bordering Westchester County and Yonkers down to Fordham Road or Pelham Parkway.

Historically, the north Bronx has been an affluent area and was even a childhood home to U.S. President John F. Kennedy.[06] Today, it remains more affluent than the south Bronx. With a strong suburban vibe, neighborhoods in the north Bronx may be a mixture of historic architecture, modern buildings, individual family homes with yards, and public green spaces. Some portions of the north Bronx have a similar feel to Staten Island.

Care and amenities in Bronx assisted living

A Place for Mom’s partner communities are generally located within the north Bronx as of 2023. Here’s a breakdown of the types of care services our partner assisted living facilities offer in this area:[03]

  • Around 33.3% offer on-site skilled nursing.
  • Over 66.7% offer an on-site physician or comparable provider.
  • Around 33.3% provide a pet-friendly environment, which may be beneficial for mental and emotional wellness.

With locations in the north Bronx, A Place for Mom’s partner communities typically offer more luxurious and more spacious accommodations than what’s available in some of the other NYC boroughs. These communities typically have large windows, accessible common areas, and sprawling footprints. For example, these communities may feature the following amenities:[03]

  • An on-site wellness or fitness center
  • Entertainment centers, such as movie theaters and libraries
  • Multiple dining spaces, such as a pub, bistro, or outdoor dining space
  • Beauty salons or barbershops
  • Art studios for creative pursuits

The types of services offered in A Place for Mom’s partners communities in the Bronx may include the following:

  • Staff available 24/7
  • On-site worship services
  • Specialized diet accommodations for health or religious reasons, such as kosher meals
  • Fitness classes
  • Educational classes
  • Social and cultural activities
  • Community app for mobile devices that highlights events, monitors vital signs, and provides messaging within the community

Assisted living laws and regulations in the Bronx

As part of New York, Bronx assisted living facilities — also called adult care facilities by New York State — are monitored by the New York State Department of Health. To maintain resident safety and quality of care, the department inspects these facilities approximately every 12 months.

When looking at a prospective assisted living facility in the Bronx, you may wish to view the publicly available reports and information on the NYS Department of Health website. You can access this information by using the Department of Health’s adult care facilities search portal. To use this search portal, select “Bronx” under the “Select a Region/County” drop-down menu.
