Arts, Culture, Entertainment, and Recreation

As the capital of the state of New York, Albany has arts and cultural amenities that rival any other major East Coast city. The center of the art world in Albany is The Egg, a large and uniquely shaped performance art center whose shape resembles its name. The Egg is located in the sprawling Empire State Plaza which has a reflecting pool and an underground shopping concourse filled with public art installations. Located right next to the plaza is the New York State Capitol building, which was built in the 1800s. Also located nearby are the New York State Museum, which focuses on natural and cultural history, and the Albany Institute of History and Art, which is famous for its Hudson River School paintings.

For those who are interested in learning more about the past, there are a number of fascinating historical sights in the city that are worth a visit. The USS Slater is a World War II cannon-class destroyer escort that has been converted into a museum and docked on the banks of the Hudson River. The Slater is now designated a museum ship and is the only ship of its kind still afloat in the United States. For those interested in the city’s colonial history, the Schuyler Mansion is a historic landmark. Built in 1765, the house now serves as a museum documenting the life of its owner, Philip Schuyler, who was a general in the continental army and an early U.S. senator.

For those who enjoy the outdoors, there are a number of great places for walks and visits in Albany. One popular destination is the historic Lark Street, which has tons of independently-owned shops and classic architecture. The largest park in the city is Washington Park, the origin of which can be traced back to the 1686 city charter. The park has served many roles throughout history, including a gunpowder storage area, a cemetery, and a parade ground for military demonstrations. Now the 82-acre park is primarily used as a nice place to enjoy the nice afternoon sun.


The Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) provides bus transportation throughout the city and the surrounding area. The CDTA offers over 50 bus routes, 29 of which run through downtown. Fares can be purchased as single rides or all-day passes, which can be obtained on the bus.
