An assisted living community is an organized living community which provides aid, supervision, and care to independent individuals who are not in need of skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities usually provide help with the activities of daily life, outings for organized activity, and aid with appointments and transportation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, “aging in place”, or skilled nursing. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . New Jersey has a number of provisions related to this kind of community. Department of Health and Senior Services governs this community type. Staff members receive training in a number of fields. These include: infection control/prevention, pain management, residents rights, and Alzheimer’s’ and dementia care. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include dietary services, limited nursing care, assist with personal care, and recreational activities. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a level of care assessment, plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states, nursing needs, and a health care assessment. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include administer medication, monitor dosage, and supervise and assist with self-administration of medication. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, provide three meals a day, and prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances.
