Assisted living communities administer oversight, social events, and personal care to individuals around 65 years old. The types of service provided often involve assistance with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, hospice, or skilled nursing care. The Department of Human Services licenses supervises this community type. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of subjects. These provisions include proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications, reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, and medication supervision and administration. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as service plan identifies the individual’s specific needs for care, service plan identifies the individual’s need for services, service plan takes into account the preferences and competency of the resident, and A comprehensive written assessment that that describes prescribed treatments and medications that must be provided to the community prior to admission. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three daily meals and snacks must be provided, Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council, and communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include guidance, being aware of a resident’s general whereabouts, supervised personal care, and reminding resident of important activities to be carried out. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan.
