Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which offers supervision, support, and assistance to self-sufficient individuals who are not in need of skilled nursing care. The services offered often involve help with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In certain situations, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, continuing care, or hospice. The monthly median cost for a private room is around $9,292 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $8,373 . The state of Michigan maintains a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Department of Human Services licenses licenses this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, three daily meals and snacks must be provided, and Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication supervision and administration, reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, and proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as The home must complete a service plan in cooperation with each resident and/or their representative, service plan takes into account the preferences and competency of the resident, service plan identifies the individual’s need for services, and The service plan must be updated annually and following a significant change in health status. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include reminding resident of important activities to be carried out, assisting a resident to keep appointments, supporting a resident’s personal and social needs, and supervised personal care. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. Staff must receive training in a variety of fields. These include: standard precautions, personal care, staff training program based on the residents’ service plans, and containment of infectious disease.
