Assisted living communities provide organized social events and apartment style housing as well as individualized support. The types of service offered often include aid with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under observation and assessment. In select instances, communities may offer dementia care, “aging in place”, or hospice. The monthly median cost for a private room is around $9,292 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $8,373 . Michigan has specific regulations related to this kind of community. The Department of Human Services licenses governs this type of community. Staff members obtain education in a variety of fields. These include: personal care, standard precautions, administration of medication, and residents rights and responsibilities. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supporting a resident’s personal and social needs, being aware of a resident’s general whereabouts, guidance, and assisting a resident to keep appointments. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council, three daily meals and snacks must be provided, and communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional. These provisions include medication supervision and administration, proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications, and reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met.
