Assisted living communities administer healthcare, oversight, and social opportunities to persons around 65 years old. Services provided often involve help with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide continuing care, Alzheimer’s care, or hospice. The Department of Human Services licenses supervises this community type. Staff are required to obtain training in a number of areas. These include: supervision, safety and fire prevention, first-aid, and administration of medication. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication supervision and administration, proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications, and reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include being aware of a resident’s general whereabouts, supervised personal care, assisting a resident to keep appointments, and reminding resident of important activities to be carried out. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as service plan identifies the individual’s need for activities, The home must complete a service plan in cooperation with each resident and/or their representative, service plan identifies the individual’s specific needs for care, and The service plan must be updated annually and following a significant change in health status. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, three daily meals and snacks must be provided, and Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council.
