Assisted living communities usually provide care supervision, assistance with the activities of daily life, and aid with appointments and transit. In some situations, communities may offer dementia care, respite, or “aging in place”. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene licenses this type of community. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include uncomplicated interventions to manage occasional behaviors that might disrupt or harm the resident or others, supervision or occasional assistance with two or more activities of daily living, assistance in accessing and coordinating health services, and occasional assistance in accessing social and recreational services. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be of sufficient quantity and quality to meet daily nutritional needs, meals must be palatable, programs must provide three meals a day and snacks, and meals must be varied. Staff are required to obtain education in a number of subjects. These include: the resident assessment process, emergency disaster plans, health and psychosocial needs, and the use of service plans. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a comprehensive mental and physical assessment, ability to self-administer medication, activities of daily living needs, and assessed on psychiatric conditions. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications, medication administration, and a licensed health professionall must review each resident’s medication regime within 14 days of admission.
