Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, nursing, or respite. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . Maryland has specific standards related to this kind of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene certifies this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a comprehensive mental and physical assessment, assessed on psychiatric conditions, treatment requirements, and risk factor management needs. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance in accessing and coordinating health services, assistance with self-administration of medications, monitoring and management of occasional psychological or psychiatric episodes or fluctuations that require uncomplicated intervention or support, and occasional assistance in accessing social and recreational services. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be of sufficient quantity and quality to meet daily nutritional needs, meals must be properly prepared, meals must be varied, and meals must be palatable. Staff members obtain training in a variety of subjects. These areas include fire and life safety, the resident assessment process, state-approved, 5-hour training on cognitive impairment and mental illness, and emergency disaster plans. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications, a licensed health professionall must review each resident’s medication regime within 14 days of admission, and physical assistance to open and remove medications from a container.
