Assisted living communities have the luxury of regular social events and apartment style housing as well as individual help. Services provided often involve help with ADLs. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. In select cases, communities may provide hospice, Alzheimer’s care, or respite. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . The state of Maryland has a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene licenses this type of community. Staff are required to obtain education in a variety of subjects. These areas include health and psychosocial needs, fire and life safety, basic food safety, and the use of service plans. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance in accessing and coordinating health services, supervision or occasional assistance with two or more activities of daily living, assistance with self-administration of medications, and monitoring and management of occasional psychological or psychiatric episodes or fluctuations that require uncomplicated intervention or support. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include programs must provide three meals a day and snacks, meals must be palatable, meals must be properly prepared, and meals must be of sufficient quantity and quality to meet daily nutritional needs. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as treatment requirements, assessed on psychiatric conditions, evaluation by a health care practitioner is required and changes must be made to the resident’s service plan if there is an assessment score change in any way, and risk factor management needs. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff who have passed a Board of nursing program may administer medications, residents’ ability to self-administer must be reviewed at least quarterly by a licensed health professionall, and physical assistance to open and remove medications from a container.
